Almost stealthily, Zoox, a San Francisco-based startup now owned by Amazon, has begun publicly testing its new robotaxi. Since mid-June, the steering wheel-, pedal- and driverless robotaxis have been driving on a nearly one-and-a-half-mile stretch of road in a loop around Zoox’s Las Vegas office.
Before the vehicle was allowed on the roads, it first had to meet the Nevada DMV’s own and safety standards. Four people can ride it at speeds up to 35 miles per hour (56 km/h). Currently, the passengers are exclusively Zoox employees.
