Tesla Offers Free Transfer of FSD Software From Old to New Tesla

In an email today, Tesla offers that customers can transfer the Full Self-Driving software from their old Tesla to a new Tesla at no additional cost if they take delivery of the car by September 30 – the close of the third quarter of 2023.

Until now, Tesla owners could not transfer the FSD, but instead had to buy it new for the new vehicle, which may well be a reason for many not to trade in their old Tesla for a new one. I myself paid a $3,000 premium for the FSD in mid-2019, which was then available to me as FSD Beta starting in late 2022. In the meantime, however, Tesla has raised the price of the FSD several times and currently has it posted at $15,000.

This may have deterred some Tesla owners – myself included – from buying a new Tesla. This obstacle seems to be removed for the next few weeks and could give sales a boost. Whether this tactic works, we will see in October when Tesla’s next sales figures are published.
