This Cruise robotaxi (with a safety driver) was spotted on southbound HWY 101 in San Francisco on November 16th, 2023 at around 6:30pm.
The sensor mounted on the right, rear side of the car – a lidar, as far as I could tell – was conspicuous, pointing downwards and scanning the side of the car.
Following the incident with a woman trapped under the car, this may be the first attempt to incorporate improvements around obstacles in the robotaxi. Cruise has currently suspended both driverless and safety-driven autonomous journeys.
Cruise took further, quite conspicuous measures elsewhere. First, both Austin and a San Francisco depot on CostCo’s 11th and Harrison Street garage disappeared. And then the Wall Street Journal reported a suspension of Cruise’s employee stock program, likely indicating Cruise’s financial difficulties.

The Last Driver License Holder... 
Doesn’t make a lot of sense. While the Origin has sensors on poles out at the corners, I would think they would be testing any such sensor like this mostly at their test track, throwing soft crash test dummies under the cars. Not much to see on the street they haven’t seen in origin tests.
I don’t see a special LIDAR for this. In fact I think 3D ultrasound under the car is the best plan here.
