A few months ago, Mercedes showed a prototype in which Mercedes-Benz Research & Development North America (MBRNA) demonstrated the integration of ChatGPT into its own voice assistant in the vehicle cockpit. The “Hey Mercedes” command calls up the function, which can be used to ask the vehicle about points of interest at the destination, among other things. Mercedes-Benz intends to incorporate this integration, which has generated a great deal of interest, into production vehicles.
Volkswagen is now following suit and has also announced ChatGPT integration. It will be available in a number of the latest model generation from the second quarter of 2024.
With the beginning second quarter of 2024, Volkswagen will be the first volume manufacturer to offer ChatGPT as feature in many models and markets.
By saying „Hello IDA“, you‘ll activate VW’s voice assistant with access to the constantly growing database of hashtag#Artificialintelligence. This gives you many new opportunities, which go far beyond today’s voice control!
ChatGPT is offered in conjunction with the latest generation of infotainment in the following models: ID.7, ID.4, ID.5, ID.3, the all-new Tiguan, the all-new Passat, as well as in the new Golf – including cars already in the hands of customers.
Other Group brands’ models based on MEB and MQB evo with voice assistants will have access to the chatbot in the future, too.
The fact that two German manufacturers are pushing ahead with the integration of large language models demonstrates the interest and benefits that such AIs are already providing today, as well as the speed with which AI is being developed and used. Barely a year and a half after ChatGPT became known to a wider public, it is already appearing in customer products even in quite conservative industries with long development cycles.
