Waymo Applies for Deployment / Commercial Robotaxi License for Los Angeles

After San Francisco and Phoenix, Google’s sister company Waymo is on its way to offering a commercial robotaxi service in Los Angeles. Driverless Waymos have already been driving in LA for several months, but now the company wants to obtain the necessary approval from the Californian Public Utility Commission (PUC) for commercial operation.

The PUC is responsible for cab licenses, among other things, and Los Angeles would be a big step for Waymo. The size of this metropolitan area is a special challenge. It is still unclear how long the approval process will take, but it should be quicker than in San Francisco. With a technology that has proven its functionality, it is likely that approval will be granted this year.
