Tesla’s Secret Robotaxi Tests and Possible Test Areas

The presentation of Tesla’s vision of autonomous robotaxis in the form of the Cybercab and the Robovan has provoked some discussion about the actual state of the technology and when it can really be expected.

The Verge magazine revealed that the technology could be further along than previously assumed. For example, Tesla has been operating a ride-hailing service with its own vehicles since the majority of this year, which has so far only been open to employees. These vehicles come with a safety driver. The Robotaxis can be ordered using a ridehailing app that Tesla teased some time ago.

In the same breath, Palo Alto Online reports that city officials are in talks with Tesla to test and operate the robotaxi service in Palo Alto. Currently, the city operates the Palo Alto Shuttle or Palo Alto Link transportation system, including cabs, to meet the mobility needs of residents. Discussions are still in the early stages and details are still unclear.
