An e-mail arrived in my inbox today and it came from Waymo. Along with a breakdown of my journeys this year. In total, Waymos made more than four million journeys in 2024, and they were completely driverless. They drove over eleven million hours, saving over 6 million kilograms of CO2. In November, Waymo reached its peak number of weekly rides, which has since amounted to 150,000. In total, Waymo serves an area of 500 square miles (1,295 square kilometers) in four metropolitan regions in the USA.
The most popular destinations in each city this year were Sky Harbor International Airport in Phoenix, the Ferry Building in San Francisco and The Grove shopping center in Los Angeles.
I personally made exactly 58 trips in 2024 and over ninety since 2023. I spent almost eight hours in the car, time that I could use for other purposes than driving. In total, I covered 113 kilometers (70.5 miles), almost three times the marathon distance, and saved 25.1 kilograms of CO2 in the process.
