First Sighting of Driverless Waymo in Mountain View

They are a familiar sight in San Francisco, as well as in Los Angeles, Phoenix and Austin. But now, for the first time, a driverless Waymo Robotaxi has been spotted in Mountain View, near the Googleplex. Waymo already has a license to cover the area from San Francisco to Sunnyvale without a driver, but so far the vehicles are only on the road in San Francisco and slightly southwest of there. The fact that the first driverless Waymos have now also been spotted in Mountain View could indicate that the robotaxi service could soon be opened up to the general public.

This driverless Waymo was spotted at the intersection of La Avenida Street and N Shoreline Boulevard on January 13, 2025 at around 1:50 p.m. PST. Incidentally, the Computer History Museum can be seen in the background, where one of the cute Google Firefly vehicles is on display.
