Waymo Receives Operating License for the entire San Francisco Bay Area

Waymo is going from strength to strength. One city after another, one region after another is being supplied with Waymo One robotaxis. Two months ago, Waymo submitted documents to expand its operating area in the San Francisco Bay Area to the California Public Utility Commission (CPUC), the authority that is also responsible for cab licenses and thus the commercialization of such services, and now Waymo has received approval.

The now approved operating area covers the entire San Francisco Bay Area from San Francisco in the north to San Jose in the south, and from Milpitas in the east to Skyline HWY 85 in the west (see map).

Currently, however, Waymo actually only serves two areas of the Bay Area with the Waymo One robotaxi service: San Francisco plus a few small cities bordering SF, such as the South Bay with Palo Alto, Los Altos, Mountain View and parts of Sunnyvale (see map).

In all regions (SF Bay Area, Austin, Phoenix and Los Angeles), Waymo now has more than one million paid and driverless rides per month (250,000 per week). It is not yet known when Waymo will start driving in the new parts of the San Francisco Bay Area.
