Baidu Robotaxi Injures 2 Pedestrians in China

A Baidu Apollo Go robotaxi operated by Hello in the central Chinese city of Zhuzhou injured two pedestrians today, both of whom were taken to hospital intensive care units with injuries, according to Chinese media reports.

It is still unclear exactly how the accident happened, but one person wearing a bicycle helmet was trapped under the vehicle, while another person was lying on the ground behind the vehicle.

According to eyewitness accounts and videos shared on social media, the self-driving vehicle struck two pedestrians (one man, one woman) on Yanjiang Road at around 9:00 a.m. One victim was trapped under the vehicle, while another was injured nearby. Video footage shows the victim trapped under the vehicle wearing a helmet and covered in blood, while bystanders attempt to lift the vehicle to free them.

Authorities don’t know yet what really happened. Some scenarios could have been:

  • Did the AV not notice and hit the two people?
  • Did the biker (one person wore a bike helmet) cut the AV off and this was hit?
  • Did the biker hit or try to avoid the pedestrian and then both flew into the path of the AV?

The investigations are ongoing.
