Waymo Now With 450,000 Commercial Driverless Rides Per Week

CNBC reports that Waymo now completes 450,000 paid, driverless trips per week. These figures came from the investment firm Tiger Global, which estimated them from publicly available data in a letter to its investors. In April, the figure was 250,000 trips, but since then Waymo has expanded its operating area and more than doubled its fleet.

This brings Waymo’s monthly total to 1.9 million trips. With its previously announced expansion into two dozen additional cities, Waymo is likely to complete one million paid, driverless trips per week over the course of the coming year.

One question that remains unanswered is which vehicles will be used for further expansion. It is known that Waymo owns between 3,500 and 4,500 Jaguar iPace vehicles and has equipped them with Waymo Driver. However, this vehicle platform is no longer in production. More than two dozen Zeekr vehicles have been spotted in San Francisco, and according to Waymo, the first Hyundai Ioniq 5 are also on the roads. But does Waymo already have the necessary number of vehicles in preparation for its planned expansion?
