WeRide is currently conducting tests with three vehicles in Switzerland, one of 12 countries where the company is now operating. I had the opportunity to ride along in one of the vehicles for a lap in the test area around Regensdorf-Watt, a suburb of Zurich. Based on the Nissan Ariya, the vehicle is equipped with 11 cameras and 6 lidars, as well as computing units in the trunk.
Among other things, the sensors on the underside of the doors were interesting; these are designed to detect people and objects trapped under the vehicle following the Cruise accident. The vehicle also has a built-in air compressor to blow away dirt or snow from the sensors. An air vent can be seen in the last photo.
This ride took place in Regensdorf-Watt, a suburb of Zurich in Swirzerland on March31st, 2026 at around 1:15pm CDT. During the five-minute ride, there were no issues or interventions by the safety driver, and the vehicle felt very smooth and stable, comparable to Waymo’s vehicles.
This was my second ride with WeRide; I took my first ride three years ago at CES 2023 in Las Vegas. This project is being carried out in collaboration – amongst others – with Swiss railways SBB under the name iamo.
