BMW announces development center for self-driving cars

With its shift of focus for the i-series from electric to autonomous cars, BMW is bundling forces in a new development center. Next year a research facility is scheduled to open in Unterschleißheim, Germany, close to Munich, with a capacity for 2,000 employees.

Currently BMW employs 600 mostly software developers that work on highly automated vehicles on different locations. Also new forms of work under the project title “project i 2.0” shall contribute for better collaboration between the teams. Apparently BMW aims at making its organization more agile and faster. So far BMW has not been among the top companies in autonomous vehicle development. For too long BMW has blinded itself from the oncoming changes through its motto Joy of Driving.

The first autonomous BMW iNEXT shall hit the market in 2021. First road tests in Munich are scheduled for 2017.
