The extent to which electric mobility enables new thinking was demonstrated, among other things, at the Stellantis booth at CES 20222, where the company and Goodyear showed this electric skateboard platform with ball-shaped tires. I’ve already written about this in my book The Last Driver’s License Holder…. from 2017 (German version, English version followed 2019), but it was only now that I saw them live for the first time. Goodyear calls them “spherical tires” and touts them for autonomous driving in this video from 2016:
With such tires, the platform can move in all directions, there is no need to steer and navigate in the traditional sense anymore. How they’ll perform under real conditions remains to be seen.
