At CES, LIDAR company Luminar demonstrated on a closed course using dummy people and other objects how the Luminar hardware and software on a car together detects objects on the road and brakes in front of them.

Another demo shows how the LIDAR detects a child suddenly running into the street, hidden by a car:
In the last example, Luminar demonstrates how the car equipped with its technology detects a person dummy (a child) and brakes for it, while in parallel a Tesla Model Y is driving in Autopilot mode, which does not detect the child and runs over it.
