The analysts at Earnest examined the credit card data of customers of transportation service providers Uber, Lyft and Waymo over the past 13 quarters and looked at how many of the customers used the respective service several times during this period.
It turned out that Waymo customers are the most loyal of the three providers. For example, 13.7 percent of Lyft customers had used the provider again, 22.6 percent of Uber customers and 33.3 percent of Waymo customers.
I can name a few reasons from my own experience, as well as those of other customers:
- it’s always the same type of vehicle, so you know what to expect;
- the standard and cleanliness of the vehicle is higher;
- the Waymo drives much more carefully, comfortably and safely than human drivers in most cases (an oft-heard quote from people who have ridden with me in the Waymo was “it feels much safer than my taxi/Uber/Lyft ride from SF airport”);
- there’s no driver to talk to;
- it feels safer for many women because they don’t have to expect a pickup line from the (mostly male) driver;
Earnest also states that Waymo is certainly still a novelty factor in the cities it serves and perhaps that’s why the service is used more often and expects that number to drop.
