250,000 driverless robotaxi rides per week require not only operations centers and depots in San Francisco, Austin, Phoenix, Bay Area, and Los Angeles, but also a corresponding factory to provide more and more robotaxis. After all, Waymo also plans to launch or begin preparations for robotaxi operations in Atlanta, Miami, and Washington, D.C., as well as other cities, by 2026.
Waymo has now provided the first glimpse of the integration factory for Waymo Robotaxis in Mesa, a suburb of Phoenix in Arizona, which is operated jointly with Magna. Thousands of Jaguar iPace vehicles, which Waymo acquired from Magna in Austria as a precautionary measure before production is discontinued in December 2024, are to be equipped with the Waymo Driver there.
Waymo currently has 1,500 robotaxis based on the Jaguar iPace in operation in the five regions mentioned, with more than two thousand additional robotaxis now to be added. The factory is also already prepared for the next generation of vehicles, the Zeekr RT from Geely. Almost a dozen of this new vehicle type have already been spotted at the San Francisco depot.
