Zoox Provides an Insight Into Vehicle Production

In Hayward, the Amazon subsidiary Zoox has opened a production facility for its robotaxis and has now provided an insight for the first time. So far, the first vehicles have been manufactured in Fremont, not far from the Tesla factory. This factory will be retained, but will now be used exclusively for retrofitting Zoox test vehicles (currently the Toyota Highlander).

The new factory in Hayward has a production capacity of up to 10,000 vehicles per year. Zoox stands out among the developers of autonomous driving technology because it is the only company so far to have developed and mass-produced a vehicle designed purely for driverless robotaxi services. In this vehicle, which I have already reported on in videos here and here, the up to four riders sit opposite each other, as if in a gondola or train compartment.

The factory itself covers 20,400 square meters (about 3.5 American football fields or 220,000 square feet). It is also expected to create hundreds of jobs. Zoox plans to start commercial operations in Las Vegas and San Francisco later this year.

    1. It works a bit different in the US. Each manufacturer can bring up to 5,000 vehicles on the road that do not correspond to the NHTSA speccifications.
But yes, so far there has not been another vehicle like that (with the exception of the Cruise Origin, but they shut down).
