While the public focus on autonomous driving today is primarily on robotaxis, the significance for another important area should not be overlooked: logistics. Aurora, a startup in Mountain View, has been developing and testing autonomous trucks for years. The tests are mainly conducted in Texas.
And now Aurora CEO Chris Urmson, formerly head of development at Waymo, has announced that Aurora trucks have already covered 50,000 miles, or 80,000 kilometers, without drivers on public roads.
According to Urmson, the next goals on the agenda are: reaching 100,000 miles (160,000 kilometers) in autonomous driving mode, expanding autonomous driving to adverse weather conditions, and opening new lanes to increase the value of Aurora Driver for our customers.
Here, by the way, is a recommended documentary with this segment on autonomous trucks, which also features Chris Urmson and Aurora.
