Safe Street Rebels: How Idiots Hinder Safer Road Traffic

While Waymo robotaxis now complete 450,000 commercial, driverless rides per week and carry passengers in 10 metropolitan areas in the US, statistics also show that they are safer on the roads than human drivers. The differences are so great that American neurosurgeon Jonathan Slotkin even spoke of a “breakthrough for public health.”

But there are also opponents of robotaxis who are not swayed by facts. In San Francisco, a group of individuals who call themselves the Safe Street Rebels have been active for several months, vandalizing robotaxis by sticking tape on the sensors, placing construction cones on the hoods, or even battering the vehicles with hammers or jumping on them.

Hannah Fry from the BBC interviewed the Safe Street Rebels and accompanied them on their nightly vandalism raids against Waymos. Only through her non-judgmental questions does she reveal the contradictions in the Safe Street Rebels’ statements. It is embarrassing, as we have already seen with anti-vaxxers. What both groups have in common is that, in the name of safety for people, they are doing exactly the opposite: they are endangering people.

Postscript: Any anti-vaccination commenters will be blocked. Conspiracy confabulists and morons from that side are not welcome here. Thank you for your understanding.

  1. It’s important to note that Safe Street Rebels doesn’t just oppose robotaxis, but ALL road traffic. So the fact that human-powered road traffic is more dangerous doesn’t stop them a bit.
