Nine months after receiving approval from the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), Waymo has now been granted the license required for commercial operation to significantly expand the service area of its robotaxi service. To date, Waymo has been operating in California between San Francisco and San José, as well as in the Los Angeles metropolitan area.
While the operational area previously covered 5,843 square miles (15,134 square kilometers), it has now increased tenfold to 47,493 square miles (123,006 square kilometers).
By way of comparison: Germany covers 138,070 square miles (357,600 square kilometers), Austria 32,383 square miles (83,871 square kilometers), and Switzerland 15,940 square miles (41,284 square kilometers). In other words: The approved mining areas are as large as Austria and Switzerland combined, or cover one-third of Germany.
