Today I took my fifth ride in a Zoox robotaxi, but it was the first one—unlike the first four—that took place without a Zoox employee on board. Zoox has been operating a commercial robotaxi fleet in Las Vegas for several weeks now, with rides taking place between a few predetermined locations in a limited number of resorts.
Currently, demand for rides remains high, even though they are no longer free, as they were during the previous test phase. That’s why I keep seeing the app indicate that no vehicles are currently available. But this time I got lucky—albeit with one downside: I had to wait 26 minutes for the vehicle. And that’s exactly what I did.
In the app, you can set the color of the lights on the vehicle so you can recognize it. Each of the Las Vegas resorts has a designated pick-up and drop-off location for ridesharing services and robotaxis; in this case, at the Aria, it was in a basement level.

The ride itself took 12-13 minutes and covered 3.33 miles (5.4 kilometers), and cost $19.01 (€16.36).
