A spectacular video from a Tesla dashboard camera shows how the Autopilot warns of a collision fractions of a second ahead of an accident happening with other cars. The Tesla even applied the brakes before the driver could react.
The video was posted an Twitter and shows a red compact car hitting an SUV on a Dutch highway. The SUV rolls over multiple times, the red compact car slides to the emergency lane. Luckily, nobody was injured.
It’s interesting to see how the Autopilot not only watches the vehicle in front, but also the other cars ahead and reacts in time. This type of forward looking driving is what self-driving car technology is promising. Cars equipped with such a system have a much broader and farther looking situational awareness than humans can have. This is the first spectacular case of where the technology delivered on its promise.
