With 600cars Waymo today operates the largest fleet of autonomous test vehicles. But now the Google-sibling seems to ramp up its efforts even more. Thousands of more Fiat-Chrysler Pacifica Minivans were ordered and are scheduled for delivery over the course of the year. The exact number is supposed to be below 10,000 vehicles.
According to Waymo-CEO John Krafcik, this is another step in the efforts from development to making the cars commercially available
“We’ve moved from research and development to operations and deployment.”
Google became the first company that operates its autonomous taxi fleet without a safety driver. How far Waymo is ahead of other companies was displayed in the Disengagement Report from January 2017. Back then Waymo cars had to hand over control to a human driver only every 5,000 miles.
