Chinese autonomous vehicle developer WeRide will begin testing autonomous street sweepers in May 2022. This will involve the deployment of a fleet of more than 50 driverless street sweepers – so-called ‘Robosweepers’ – in the Nanshan district of China’s megacity Guangzhou, which can sweep the street, spray water and disinfect.

The design of the all-electric vehicles is also new. There is no driver’s cab, no steering wheel and no pedals in the vehicle itself. The fleet is coordinated centrally by cloud-based AI. The vehicles can also autonomously refill water, dispose of waste, park and recharge without intervention from human operators. The vehicles will be used day and night.
