Mountain View-based start-up Nuro.ai has received approval from the California Department of Transportation DMV to test driverless delivery robots on public roads. The test area is limited to parts of 9 cities in the communities of Santa Clara and San Mateo in the Bay Area. The cities are Atherton, East Palo Alto, Los Altos Hills, Los Altos, Menlo Park, Mountain View, Palo Alto, Sunnyvale and Woodside.

This makes Nuro the second company after Waymo to be allowed to operate completely driverless autonomous vehicles on public roads. Nuro already had permission to test autonomous cars in California, as did 65 companies in total. The start-up started testing two years ago in Scottsdale, Arizona, and with the second generation of delivery robots in Houston, Texas.
