Zoox Starts Tests in Houston and San Diego

After expanding to 10 metropolitan areas so far, Zoox will begin testing in two additional U.S. cities this September: Houston and San Diego. This brings the total number of cities where Zoox is testing to the San Francisco Bay Area, Las Vegas, Seattle, Austin, Miami, Atlanta, Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., Dallas, Phoenix, and now Houston and San Diego.

For now, the company will be using Toyota Highlander vehicles equipped with sensor arrays to create navigation maps for these cities. Only later will the vehicles specifically designed as robotaxis—often referred to internally as “Zooxies”—be put into service.
